Matthew 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

The Temptation Of Presumption
The second temptation of Jesus is striking because Satan takes Him to a religious place—the pinnacle of the Temple in Jerusalem. This wasn't a temptation in the wilderness among obvious dangers. It happened at the center of worship, where people expected to encounter God.
Satan's challenge was essentially this: "If You are the Son of God, prove it. Jump, and let God rescue You." He even quoted Scripture to support his argument.
The temptation wasn't simply about jumping from a high place. It was about demanding that God prove His faithfulness. It was a temptation to seek attention, recognition, and a dramatic display rather than quietly trusting the Father's plan.
How often do we face the same temptation?
We may not stand on a temple pinnacle, but we can place ourselves in situations where we expect God to rescue us from decisions He never asked us to make. We can seek signs instead of obedience, spectacle instead of faithfulness, and public recognition instead of humble service.
Jesus responded, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." (Matthew 4:7)
True faith doesn't require us to force God's hand. Faith trusts God enough to obey Him without demanding proof. It follows His Word even when there is no crowd watching and no dramatic miracle occurring.
The world often says, "If God is real, let Him prove Himself." Jesus teaches us that mature faith says, "God has already proven Himself. I will trust Him." Testing creates an artificial crisis and demands that God intervene to fix it.
The first temptation was to doubt God's provision, the second was to presume it.
