The Headwaters Blog

Listen, if there’s one thing seventy-some years on this green earth has taught me, it’s a lesson in basic plumbing.

This isn't a polite thing to talk about, but you wouldn’t dream of leaving a "gift" in the porcelain throne and just walking away, letting it sit there would you? Of course not. It’s unclean, it’s ugly, and frankly, it starts to stink up the whole house.

So, why in the world do you keep doing it with your head?

During the day, you collect "trash." Maybe it’s getting angry because someone was rude, or that ego because you didn't get the credit you deserved, or a regret about something you said or did yesterday. If you let that stuff sit there, it doesn't just go away. It ruins your mood, then it ruins your day, and eventually, it starts ruining the people around you. Not to mention you can't do much for God's Kingdom. You have to flush it.

Flushing your mental toilet isn't about being a "saint" or never getting annoyed. It’s about the reset. It’s where you on purpose tell yourself, "I am not carrying this another minute."

Now, I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t just flush once a week on Sunday morning and expect to stay clean. Life is messy. You’re going to have bad thoughts. You’re going to get cranky. You’re going to feel like the world owes you something.

The secret to a happy life isn't never having "crap" happen to you; it's being quick with the handle.

When you feel that bitterness rising up, deal with the business, pull the handle, and don't look back.

Keep your hand on the lever. Your family will thank you, your blood pressure will thank you, and you’ll find you breathe a whole lot easier.

Now, quit dwelling on this and go do something useful. And for heaven's sake, flush the toilet.
